Constance Oyibo knew exactly what she should be eating. She had known for years. She was eating toast, because cooking for one is a specific kind of bleak.

The elimination phase is time-limited and supervised, because a restricted diet held indefinitely creates a second problem while solving the first.

A year in

Phase one changes two things and nothing else. Most participants find this insulting for about three weeks and survivable thereafter.

We kept solving a knowledge problem that nobody had. The problem was that eating alone is grim.

What the diary showed

The diary runs for three weeks before any advice is given, because advice given to a guess is a guess with more confidence attached.

A shared lunch twice a week did more than four years of advice. “It isn’t about the food,” she says.
